Cannabis, a friend for the skin

By February 13, 2023No Comments

Cannabis is a true ally for skin health. The plant and its subproducts are helpful, not only in treating certain diseases such as arthritis or chronic pain, but also for the skin’s general health, both from a dermatological and medical point of view and from a cosmetic point of view too. Here are a few examples.

Cannabis for dermatological diseases

As confirmed, among others, by a study published in the Dermatology Online Journal, the cannabinoids present in Cannabis play a fundamental role in skin homeostasis, by reducing damage, such as scratches or redness, and symptoms correlated to the most common chronic or transitory diseases.

A therapy based on CBD can be indicated for example for those who suffer from acne vulgaris, a condition that happens when excess sebum, dirt and dead cells obstruct the skin’s pores causing irritation and redness by the accumulation of bacteria, but also for those who suffer from psoriasis, allergic dermatitis, contact dermatitis or atopic dermatitis, to which CBD acts as an anti-inflammatory.

The latest research has shown that the plant and its derivatives are able to slow the growth of skin cancer cells, thus preventing the proliferation of melanoma. We’ve talked about it in detail in the article Cannabis in dermatology.

Cannabis for the wellbeing of the skin

Besides its medical and therapeutic effects, Cannabis provides all-round benefits for the skin and therefore CBD is evermore present in cosmetic products.

Here’s how, in this context, cannabis can be a powerful ally for the skin.

 Cannabis against dry skin

Cannabis is great for many different skin types such as dry skin, regardless of the causes, which could be climatic conditions (cold, wind, lack of humidity), use of aggressive detergents, inappropriate exposure to sun or genetic factors.

The cannabinoids present in the plant, particularly cannabigerol (CBG) and cannabigerovarine (CBGV), appear to be able to regulate sebum production in dry skin, rebalancing correct natural hydration.

Cannabis for sensitive skin

The healing and anti-inflammatory properties of Cannabis in general and of CBD in particular and the immune-regulating effects of other cannabinoids present in the plant, appear to be very useful in the presence of sensitive skin exposed to internal and external factors.

This was underlined by a study available on Cormetics and dedicated entirely to the topical uses of the plant and its derivatives. The research shows, in particular, the positive effects of hemp seed oil, rich in flavonoids, terpenes, carotenoids and phytosterols, which, thanks to their quick absorption and their non-comedogenic action (the capacity to not obstruct pores), appear to be a powerful ally for sensitive skin.

Anti-ageing effect

Thanks to its ability to counteract free radicals and its antioxidant properties, CBD is a great anti-ageing ally to have in one’s skin care routine to reduce and slow the appearance of visible signs of skin ageing.

A study published in 2022 on the website of National Library Medicine, shows that the combined use of Retinol – a well renown ingredient able to reduce the appearance of fine lines – and Cannabidiol – which reduces the irritating effects of retinol – through the application of topical products dedicated to the well-being of the skin of the face can bring numerous benefits. In 95% of cases there has been a significant reduction in size of the pores, reduction in dehydration and superficial wrinkles; 100% of people involved in the study were satisfied by the results.
