Fibromyalgia or fibromyalgia syndrome is a chronic illness that is characterised by widespread muscle pain in the absence of signs of inflammation and often in association with other symptoms such as fatigue, sleep disturbances, memory and concentration deficits. Although there is no specific medical therapy, certain medications can help manage symptoms and improve quality of life, especially when combined with targeted physical activity.

Fibromyalgia is a non-inflammatory rheumatic disorder characterised by chronic widespread pain that affects more than 2 million people in Italy, most often women of adult age. Symptoms may appear gradually and worsen with the passage of time, or they may appear suddenly after a triggering event, such as a physical trauma, infection or psychological stress.

The exact causes of the onset of fibromyalgia are not known, but the hypothesis is that multiple genetic and environmental factors (e.g. infections or psycho-physical trauma) may contribute to the development of the disease. The most accepted hypothesis is that underlying chronic pain is an impairment of the way the brain processes the pain stimulus. In particular, in fibromyalgia sufferers, the pain threshold would be lower than normal as a result of brain sensitisation to painful stimuli.

Fibromyalgia is a chronic condition characterized by widespread pain, fatigue, and sleep disturbances. In recent years, the use of cannabidiol (CBD) oil has garnered interest as a potential treatment for fibromyalgia. This article will explore the potential benefits of CBD oil on fibromyalgia based on recent scientific studies.

Scientific Studies on CBD Oil and Fibromyalgia:

  1. A study published in 2019 in the journal “Pain” evaluated the effects of CBD oil on fibromyalgia. Researchers administered CBD to fibromyalgia patients for a period of six months. The results showed a significant reduction in pain, improvements in sleep, and an increase in quality of life among the participants.

  1. Another study conducted in 2020 and published in the journal “Clinical and Experimental Rheumatology” examined the efficacy of CBD oil on fibromyalgia. Study participants received CBD oil for eight weeks. The results indicated a reduction in pain, a decrease in depressive symptoms, and improvements in physical and mental function.

  1. A systematic review conducted in 2021, published in the journal “Journal of Clinical Medicine,” examined various studies on CBD use in the management of chronic pain, including fibromyalgia. The analysis suggested that CBD could be a promising therapeutic option for treating chronic pain, including fibromyalgia.

  1. Another study published in 2022 in the journal “Journal of Pain Research” investigated the effects of CBD oil on sleep quality and quality of life in individuals with fibromyalgia. The results showed significant improvements in sleep and quality of life among participants treated with CBD oil.

Recent scientific studies indicate that CBD oil may offer significant benefits for people suffering from fibromyalgia. Results suggest that CBD oil may help reduce pain, improve sleep, decrease depressive symptoms and improve quality of life. However, further research is needed to fully understand CBD’s mechanisms of action and to establish effective and safe dosages for use in fibromyalgia.
